Thank you to Dan Good for Absolutely Cuckoo and a festive Designer Breakfast
INSPIRING
It hasn’t been plain sailing for Dan and his wife. Like the best stories, there are ups and downs. Their first venture folded, but following a short period of working for publishers, they have followed their muse and set up Absolutely Cuckoo. This journey has brought them into contact with their creative heroes Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin of Bagpus fame. Dan said that he has become friends with the celebrated creative team and has been motivated by their friendship. With a series in production with the BBC and no shortage of ideas, Absolutely Cuckoo are set to create a new generation of pre-school programmes that will one day be fondly remembered by students everywhere.
UPLIFTING
We were given a spellbinding preview of ‘Way to blue’, a pre-school programme commissioned by the BBC and due for broadcast in 2009. The programme featured a group of characters that levitate when they do an act of kindness. The CGI characters are beautifully integrated with the real world and live action children, the interplay is mesmerising. This is sure to have a calming effect on the intended viewers and lead to some happy parents! Apparently Michael Carrington (Controller of Cbeebies) was moved to tears by ‘Way to Blue’. Not always the desired effect at a presentation, but this was all positive.
INTEGRITY
Dan explained that their intention is not to create characters with the sole purpose of merchandising and avoid making programmes that look like adverts for toy shops. The preview of ‘Dinosaur Days’ with the voice of James Bolam displayed a keen sense of wit and charm. I was happily reminded of Aardman Animation and the voicing of the Wallace character by Peter Sallis. And like Aardman they appear to be sticking to what they do best with conviction.

THE VIRTUE OF KNOWING WHAT YOU'RE RUBBISH AT Not finishing things off. Ooh, that resonated with me... i could fill an aircraft hangar with personal projects i've had ideas for that I haven't done anything with. Dan's story showed that you can actually get things finished if you hire or collaborate with people who can take them forward. GROWING ON YOUR OWN TERMS Absolutely Cuckoo has grown as a business while holding on to its integrity. SUCCESS FROM GIVING A DAMN In an age of earnest agendas and carefully calculated spin-offs, Absolutely Cuckoo have made innocent, properly-childish fun into something people want to buy. Great stuff. |

| Amanda Joined: 19 Sep 2007 Posts: 12 | ABSOLUTLEY CUCKOO How disarmingly honest Dan Goode was to talk about the failure of Lightweight Design, the business that he (sculptor) and his wife Lucy (illustrator) set up straight from art school several years ago. They developed famous character brands.
For those who missed this morning's Breakfast these are the quotes I jotted down that really struck a chord: "We worked hard but we didn't work smart." That resonates! "We were creative, inovating, little and fast moving." Ambitious too and good at business but there was a fundamental flaw. "We learned we'd been styling and reworking someone else's IP and we didn't own anything." Bigger competitors cottoned onto the idea, a new market had been created, and scooped up all the IP licenses when Lightweight's came up to renewal. The business had reached a turnover of £1m, employing several people before going into liquidation. Like many successful entrepreneurs, they learned from their mistakes and used their great knowledge to set up another business. This time developing their own character brands; a full-on broad-based character factory. Now they play on their own individual strengths and employ other people to compliment them. " We are not trying to do stuff we aren't good at. " I agree - its a waste of time tying to improve on your weaknesses. Concentrate on your strengths. Dan finishes, "it works very naturally for us." I like the way they really enjoy what they do and have managed to create warming work that expresses their personal values. They haven't set out to educate children but are just thinking of making lovely, happy children (they have three of their own to practice on). |
